Not crate training your puppy

Crate training is a crucial aspect of raising a well-behaved and healthy puppy. Puppies, much like infants, require ample sleep for their proper development. The crate serves as a valuable tool in ensuring they get the necessary rest. Additionally, it plays a pivotal role in potty training, creating a designated space for your puppy to learn proper bathroom habits.

Beyond sleep and potty training, the crate provides a safe environment that prevents your curious pup from ingesting harmful or unwanted items. It's a sanctuary where they can feel secure and protected.

For a more in-depth guide on crate training, be sure to check out our dedicated blog post "TOP 10 Reasons I Crate Train as a Balanced Dog Trainer & Dog Owner". Proper crate training not only benefits your puppy but also contributes to a more harmonious relationship between you and your furry friend.

Not socializing puppy Properly

Be very careful with this one. Too much or not enough socialization are equally dangerous to a puppy's development and lifelong mindset. Healthy socialization does NOT look like dog parks, dog day care, etc. In fact, we highly suggest you stay far away from these. (Blog post coming on the dangers of dog parks coming soon.) There are vey specific ways you can be teaching your dog about all the people, animals and environments that he/she may encounter to form a healthy mindset and foster a neutral outlook. The window of opportunity for puppy socialization is relatively small and passes quickly so do not delay! This phase is critical for the healthy development of your puppy into a dog that can confidently "go anywhere, do anything" with you. Not using a leash on your puppy

I see many puppy owners not using a leash with their pup. I see a lot of dog owners relying on fenced in back yards to contain their puppy. Instead of viewing the leash as a limitation, consider it as a means to strengthen the bond between you and your pup. If you start looking at the leash as a relationship building tool, you will see a huge impact in your relationship with your dog.

Creating too much Excitement around your puppy

Puppies are adorable. They bring joy into our lives and excite us in ways that feels invaluable to our happiness. But, I challenge you to pause and take a step back the next time you come across a puppy. I will challenge you to open your mind and view a different perspective that will add to your understanding of puppies as a primal being. Stepping out of our modern day view can be difficult but, seeing puppies/dogs through a primal lens can add value to your relationship with your dog and lead to safe, reliable freedom.

Here is your challenge: pause the next time you see a puppy, withhold the excitement and desire for cuddles. Enter the puppies space with a calm and neutral approach; allow them to use their nose and practice stillness while you observe them processing the information before them.

The excitement we express towards puppies can not only distract from natural learning processes but it can really set the puppy up for failure when it comes to the expectations we hold for him/her when fully grown. If we start associating people with excitement and constant cuddles we can expect the same behavior as a fully grown dog. This sets puppy up for failure to have public access or manners with guests coming over. It can also hinder your relationship as it suggests you are equivalent to a "litter mate". The danger in this is it, takes away healthy leadership that puppies and dogs need and crave for a well rounded dog who can go anywhere and do anything safely.

Buying all the dog treats and puppy toys

Be careful not to overstimulate or start a bribery type relationship. Yes, we can use positive reinforcement to build a foundation for drive and obedience for puppy but, at the end of the day, there are more important concepts when it comes to creating a positive relationship for a happy and coachable dog.

If you are, or ever were an athlete, you know good coaches don't gain respect through bribery. They gain it through having rules, boundaries and respectful relationships. All are achieved through healthy communication and consistentcy. In order to become your dogs favorite coach and make it to the "final playoffs" with your dog (i.e safe off leash freedom, peaceful trips to the cafe, whatever your dog goals are), build a communication system that makes sense to your dog. Show your dog you have his / her back, stick up for them when indicated, protect them, set rules for them, make those rules clear and consistent to avoid confusion. Do this and your dog will look up to you for everything he/she wants and needs. Start by incorporating these principles into your daily interactions with your best friend, and watch the positive transformation in your relationship unfold.
